Many of us are looking for something extra to do on the side, but we still want to have time for our main job, friends, and family. If you are looking to fill the gap without getting an extra job and making your own schedule, buying and reselling items from pallets may be for you. We will go over what you need, how to start, where to post, and how to purchase your first pallet!
What Do You Need to Start Reselling Liquidation Pallets?
Typically, you will need a way to transport the items, whether it be in your personal vehicle, truck, or renting a truck for a few hours when you scale up. Next, you will need an area to keep these items, with room to separate the items that you want to sell, donate, etc. Finally, you need a phone or laptop and some good ol’ determination!
Pallets can hold many items, with larger ones having over 100 items. First, separate the items into piles. The hard truth is that not everything is going to be sellable, and that is okay, part of the game. Piles can be made for donations, trash, selling, or selling for parts. I just recommend this to get a clean space- it sounds like a lot more work than it is! A few things normally end up kept inside of our house…
Now that you have a pile of items that you would like to sell, it’s time to list! You can tag each item by what you would like to sell it for, or check each item individually as you post them. My favorite is taking quick photos of the larger $$ items and researching the price while I have downtime at work.. I mean while I am on my unpaid break.
Where Can You Sell Items From a Liquidation Pallet?
Post to places like Facebook marketplace, Poshmark, WhatNot, local community groups, and more. There are tons of neighborhood groups, especially here in Arizona, that have local people looking for specific items (ISO = in search of!). Say you bought a pallet for $300, found 40 items to sell at $30 average, thats $1200 for $900 profit. Every pallet is different, and results will vary depending on the inventory and what you’re able to sell. Results are not guaranteed, but this is a great opportunity for those in Arizona who want to work on their own time, or need to work on their own time!
Why do I like pallet resale so much?
People are purchasing less and less of what they want, and more of what they need. I feel better being able to provide, say a microwave, to a family who needs one, for 30% off the original price brand new, instead of knocking door to door trying to sell something that people don’t need (although I don’t knock the hustle- that was a good, tough, summer).
The harsh truth is that many people don’t have the disposable income to purchase my homemade sourdough starter or fancy Gucci robes (I don’t actually own any Gucci) BUT they do spend the money to purchase stuff that they actually need, and I am providing it at a lower price than big box stores, AND they can pickup locally (unless you decide to ship things out, on say eBay, but still stuff people need!).
And heck, if they don’t need it, but want it, I am selling locally, helping the local economy, and helping provide a discount to the families around me. Win win win win.
Is it an easy side hustle?
I wouldn’t say it’s easy, but I would not say any side hustle that is worth it will be easy. You get to work on your own schedule, not on anybody else’s watch, and it’s not terribly un-fun. I have a great time doing it, and people love seeing what I get in my pallets. I make a few sales before I even put anything online!
